In Chennai, there are many things we hope they come. Most of them
don't, we wait, they won't, and we carry on with our lives ahead. One of
them is the rains. More so when the whole country is experiencing
monsoons, the Rain God doesn't even seem to touch Chennai with a barge
pole.
But today(amidst the sultry humid mid summer of July '17) wasn't one of those days. He came, he saw and conquered whole of Chennai with his all encompassing wings of clouds. As the rains descended on our area with the cunning smile of a Shylock, he also demanded his pound of flesh!... He took away not just our evening hours of joy, walking time and some sporting activities, but also our precious electricity!
Stuck in the room as I was all to myself, with no electricity and no where to go, "what to do now" was the most dreaded question that was on my mind. Fortunately for me, my mobile phone was fully charged and net connection at its max.
In one of the posts of a whatsApp group peeped a smiling face of Mala Sinha. A fan of hers that I have always been, I downloaded the song and it happened to be one of my favourites.... "Tere Pyar Ka Aasra Chahta Hoon" of Dhool Ka Phool "fame. Wow, just lapped every word, emotion, smile, tease, twist and adaayen of Mala Sinha as the camera kept rolling on her beautiful expressive eyes and emotions.
Folks, that was only the beginning.
Next song on the youtube channel happened to be " जब प्यार किया तो डरना क्या "of Mughal e Azam in color.
Often I have heard and seen this song but never with the focus and concentration of today. To put it simply,.. just mesmerizing. The grandeur of picturisation, subtleness of the situation, sensitivities of expressions, play of words and the haunting melody of the musical score left me simply awestruck.
I have seen many plays full of emotions. But here in this song, barring perhaps the Hasya rasa, every other facet of the Navarasa was on display.
The arrogant looks of Emporor Akbar, none other than Prithvi Raj Kapoor, who claimed to have conquered the dreams, future and life of Anarkali, but alas, only gradually converting into fear, anxiety, despair and helplessness....
The sheer helplessness of a lover prince Salim, so beautifully expressed by Dilip Sahab, just with his desperate eyes...
A sad, dutiful and dignified Jodha, the mother with so much compassion, yet unable to do anything to help the love life of her only son...
Lastly and most importantly, the Centre piece of attraction the one and only Anarkali.. MADHUBALA at her visual expressions best...
The kind of aggression and fearlessness she has expressed through her eyes.. haunts me even now. Her nimbleness on the feet, awesome gyrating movements, grandeur of the sets and the 'sound' of music... all of them complement so seamlessly to the subtle pained, vanquished and yet the gritty fearless looks of Anarkali during the dance drama.. sure took me to a different level altogether.
जब प्यार किया तो डरना क्या..
ये गाना नहीं देखा तो देखा क्या!
The director.. K Asif saab, what a Magnum Opus! You are 'Personne extraordinaire'.
Thank you Chennai rains... You made this 'power-less' drizzly dark dreary evening into one of my most memorable musical evenings in Chennai.
